Tattoo Aftercare: The Ultimate Guide for Healing Your New Ink

Yay new ink! But what happens next?

Getting a tattoo is an exciting milestone, but the aftercare process is just as important as the tattoo itself. Proper tattoo aftercare ensures your ink heals correctly and remains vibrant for years to come. Here's your complete guide to tattoo healing, from day one to full recovery.

After you leave the shop, your tattoo is technically an open wound, so it’s crucial to treat it with care. I usually opt for using second skin film to protect the tattoo for the first few days. My recommendation is to leave it for no longer than 3 days. Showers are fine however avoid baths and pool. Don't soak the film in water. Remove the second skin under warm water and start pulling the bottom corner along the skin, just like a 3M tape. Keep pulling along the skin until film comes off. Avoid pulling up/out like a bandaid as it can pull ink with it resulting in a faded tattoo. I have a video explaining how to remove the second skin film easily here.

For the first few days, keep the area clean by gently washing it with lukewarm water and mild, fragrance-free soap. Avoid scrubbing or picking at the tattoo to reduce the risk of infection. Once dry, apply a thin layer of a tattoo aftercare product, such as an unscented ointment or healing balm, to keep the skin hydrated.

One of the most common questions about tattoo healing is what to expect during the tattoo healing stages. In the first week, you’ll notice your tattoo will form a thin layer of scabs. Don’t pick at these; let them fall off naturally. As your tattoo heals, it may peel, causing some itching. To alleviate discomfort, gently moisturize and avoid scratching. Once the initial healing period is over, your tattoo should look clear, but it may continue to settle and change over several weeks.

To prevent tattoo fading or damage, avoid exposing your tattoo to direct sunlight and chlorine, such as in pools or hot tubs. After full healing, protect your ink with sunscreen. If you notice any unusual redness, excessive pain, or pus, consult a professional tattoo artist to ensure your tattoo is healing properly.
